Pod zdánlivě nevinnou rouškou Svaté Marie probíhá tak trochu jiný historický výzkum. Ústav Svaté Marie se vrací na scénu v pátém dílu románové série Jodi Taylorové – a vrací se s fanfárami. Po nešťastných událostech s Časovou policií tým ústavu napravil škody, olízal si rány a činnost se opět rozjela na nejvyšší obrátky. Plné ruce práce má i Maxino oddělení historie. Nejprve však musí vyřešit jistou drobnost s duchem ze 17. století, který se zjevuje pouze panu Markhamovi. Potom historiky čeká menší nepříjemnost, když uvíznou v plamenech Velkého požáru Londýna. Také se poučí, že i chvíle, kdy si člověk potřebuje ulevit, je nutné volit s rozmyslem. U Thermopyl si jeden člen výpravy k vykonání potřeby nevybral právě vhodný okamžik, a ohrozil tak budoucnost celé západní civilizace. Max sice nedlouho předtím (nebo potom?) zahlédla ve Florencii fanatického mnicha Savonarolu a zachránila z jeho spárů několik Botticelliho obrazů odsouzených ke spálení na hranici, ale dostat svoje oddělení a celý ústav do správného rytmu jí dá tentokrát zabrat. A to má k tomu všemu na triku i organizaci Dne otevřených dveří, jenž – jak lze předvídat – určitě nedopadne dobře. S jistotou se dá říct jen jedno: život ve Svaté Marie je všelijaký, jen ne nudný.
